Former railway sites constitute unique pieces within the urban structure. Historically connected to mobility systems and productive activities, many of these spaces retain buildings, traces, structures, and elements that are part of the cities’ collective memory. This condition offers an opportunity to transform existing infrastructure into new spaces for collective use, recovering their heritage value and strengthening their integration with the surrounding urban environment.

Railway Plazas brings together two projects that explore this condition through the transformation of former railway sites into new public spaces and areas of urban activity. The proposals recover the traces of railway infrastructure as part of a new spatial structure, incorporating contemporary programs capable of activating and connecting these spaces.

The interventions articulate heritage buildings, green spaces, pedestrian routes, and new areas for gathering with programs related to culture, commerce, services, and mobility. In this way, existing structures cease to function as isolated elements and become part of a continuous system of public spaces connected to the city.

The projects work with the traces and potential of these sites to establish new urban relationships. The reuse of the railway station, the incorporation of railway elements into the landscape, and the continuity with existing public spaces connect memory with new uses, consolidating these former railway sites as active pieces within the urban structure.
